The Verdict

Lil’ Empire does not need to make a big scene. That is probably why this one works.

You walk in. You order without much effort. You find a seat. You remember there is a brewery attached. Then the burger shows up and gives you exactly what you hoped it would.

Lil’ Empire Burger at Annex Ale is not the loudest burger experience in Calgary. It is not trying to be. It is crispy, fresh, fast enough, easy enough, and very useful. That is harder to pull off than people think.

What We Ordered

An easy contender and most ordered, was the Empire Burger with Cheese.

There was also a Lil Empire Burger, an Empire with no pickles, and an Empire with jalapeno relish.

Fries did most of the side work. Chili Cheese Fries also made an appearance, along with shared nuggies. Matthew ordered no sides, because apparently someone has to make the data less fun.

Drinks included Annex Root Beer, Amber Ale, Westcoast Lager, Mango Ale, Lorem Ipsum Lager, beer, lemonade, ginger beer, cola, and one warm water from the water station.

The Room

The Annex location is a good setup. There is something very smart about putting a burger counter inside a place that already understands drinks. It makes the whole visit feel easy. You can show up hungry, grab a burger, sit with people, and not turn lunch into a full production.

The room has space. Ordering is simple. Pickup is simple. The brewery connection does a lot of heavy lifting.

That matters. A burger spot does not always need to make you feel like you are entering a new world. Sometimes it just needs to make the next hour better. Lil’ Empire mostly does that.

The main room critique was comfort. There was plenty of seating, but it was not especially cozy. Danielle wanted the space to feel warmer. Piper liked that there was room, but the seats did not make anyone want to settle in too long.

Parking also came up. James wanted more of it. Jon gave credit where it was due: it can get tight during lunch, but at least it is not paid parking.

The Burger

The Empire Burger with Cheese carried most of the table, and it did the job well. The patties had the crispy smash edges you want, the sauce was balanced, and the toppings felt fresh without making the burger fall apart.

Jon had one of the cleaner technical reads of the day. The burger had crispy edges, the right amount of sauce, and a good potato bun. His only real note was that the bun could have used a harder toast, which feels fair. A smash burger needs that contrast between soft, crispy, saucy, and fresh. Lil’ Empire got most of that right.

Matthew’s burger with jalapeno relish was probably the most interesting variation. The relish brought heat and brightness, and it gave the burger a little more personality without dragging it into novelty territory. His only concern was the meat-to-bun ratio. There was a lot of smash for the size of the bun, which made the build feel slightly off even though the flavours landed.

Overall, the burger felt like a strong Calgary staple. Not fussy. Not overbuilt. Just crispy, saucy, fresh, and easy to understand.

The Sides

The regular fries were the safer side order.

Andrew, Rylan, James, Piper, and Sam all had fries, and the scores were mostly solid. James gave them full marks.

The chili cheese fries were more split. Tristan scored them well, but Jon would not order them again. His issue was the chili. It did not have enough flavour, and he would rather get regular fries with sauce next time.

That feels like the move here. The regular fries support the burger better. The chili cheese fries sound like they should be the bigger order, but the table did not fully back that up.

The Drinks

The drinks were one of the best parts of this location.

Andrew gave the Annex Root Beer full marks. Rylan gave the Westcoast Lager full marks. James gave his beer full marks. Piper gave the lemonade full marks. Tristan started with the Mango Ale and moved to the Lorem Ipsum Lager, which is exactly the kind of behaviour this location seems built for.

That is the benefit of having Lil’ Empire attached to Annex. The burger does not have to carry the whole visit alone. You can keep it simple with a root beer or turn it into a proper sit-down with beers. Both work.

Not every drink hit the same. Sam was lower on the Mango Ale, and Matthew’s water experience became a problem. Warm water from a station should not become memorable, but here we are. A little ice-water setup would have changed that part fast.

The Critiques

The biggest critiques were not really about the burger.

The room works, but it could be more comfortable. Danielle wanted it cozier. Piper pointed out that there was lots of seating, but the seating itself was not great. That is the kind of thing that matters more when people are hanging around with drinks after eating.

Parking also came up. James wanted more of it. Jon gave the location credit for being easy enough to get to, with no paid parking, but said it can get tight during lunch. That feels like the honest version of the location: manageable, but not perfect.

On the food side, the bun could use a harder toast, and the chili cheese fries need more flavour. The water station also needs ice. That might sound minor, but if warm water gets mentioned in a burger review, it has already lost the room.

Rylan requested more beers and a beer tap at the booth with a VEK logo on it. Tristan wanted beer on demand with pre-frozen glasses. These are not normal notes, but they are spiritually correct.

Best Use Case

Lil’ Empire at Annex is a strong move when the group wants a good burger without making the whole day about the burger.

It works for lunch. It works for a casual hang. It works when some people want beer and someone else just wants a root beer, fries, and a reliable smash burger.

It is not as much of a destination experience as Class Clown. It does not have that same “clear your schedule and commit” feeling. But that is not a knock. Lil’ Empire is easier than that. You can come through without much hassle, eat well, and move on with your day.

That kind of burger spot has real value.

Final Verdict

Lil’ Empire Burger at Annex Ale feels like a Calgary burger spot people can actually keep in rotation. The experience is simple, the Annex setup adds range, and the burger is strong enough to make the visit feel worth it without needing a bunch of theatre around it.

The Empire Burger with Cheese was crispy, saucy, and fresh. The regular fries were the better side move. The drinks were a clear strength, especially with Annex right there. The room could be cozier, the buns could use a little more toast, and the chili cheese fries need more punch, but the core of the visit held up.

This was not the kind of burger that tries to dominate your day. It was the kind that makes sense on a regular day, with regular people, when everyone wants something good and nobody wants to overthink it.
