Word to the Wise: Share Your Story, Forget The Feed
It is so easy to get trapped into the mindset of making content for social media feeds instead of having a vision that stands on its own.
Many companies begin their content efforts with short social media clips. Quick pieces of content designed to be watchable, easy to publish, and frequent enough to keep the feed moving. From a sales perspective that instinct makes sense. Every business wants to grow its audience and expand its reach, so the pressure to constantly produce content is understandable.
But, when not careful, starting with rapid content often reveals a short-sighted mindset. There is rarely time taken to step back and consider the deeper story behind the organization. The result is content that lives at a surface level. One post leads to another, then another, and soon the brand finds itself caught in the same cycle as everyone else online… mediocrity.
In an environment where nearly every company is producing content, that approach makes it very difficult to stand out.
The better approach is to begin with something larger. Begin with the end in mind.
At Vek Labs we often encourage our clients to start with what we call a “capstone film”. This is the foundational story of the organization. It captures the heart and soul of the company, the people behind the work, and the purpose that drives the business forward.
Rather than focusing first on fragments of content, the capstone’s goal is to create a single, coherent storyline that communicates with clarity and intention.
Usually, our capstone films land around two, up to five minutes in length. These films are crafted with thoughtful interviews and carefully selected visuals that allow the audience to understand the businesses mission. When done well, this piece becomes the anchor of the brand’s entire content ecosystem.
Everything else can grow from there.
Once the capstone story exists, the shorter pieces of content have a place to live. Interviews can be broken down into smaller clips. Moments from the film can be repurposed for social media. Additional rapid content can be created with a clear understanding of the story it supports.
Without that foundation, short-form content often becomes directionless.
The internet is already filled with noise. When every company is racing to produce more and more content, quantity alone is rarely the thing that makes a brand memorable.
What separates organizations is the willingness to invest time and patience into something meaningful.
There is an old saying among carpenters: measure twice, cut once. The same idea applies to storytelling.
Taking the time to carefully prepare the narrative before producing the work leads to something far stronger than reacting quickly to new trends. A well produced capstone film can elevate how an organization presents itself and provide a clear foundation for the rest of its marketing.
This is the approach we believe in at Vek Labs. We produce capstone films in Calgary, Alberta and across Canada.
KEY TAKE-AWAY: Start with the story that matters most. Build something that captures the heart of the organization. Then let the rest of the content grow from that foundation.
